INDUSTRY NEWS circle 9 on reader service card building products company to become an AIA Strategic Partner As partners to the AIA we value the critical role that the architecture community plays in the fenestration industry said Nathan Creech president Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope We believe that collaboration with architects is key for us as a leading supplier of glazing focused interior and exterior products and services ensuring we provide valuable resources and innovative products so we can deliver impactful projects together Dodge Momentum Index moves lower in December The Dodge Momentum Index fell 49 percent in December to 1519 2000 100 from the revised November reading of 1597 The Momentum Index issued by Dodge Data Analytics is a monthly measure of the first or initial report for nonresidential building projects in planning which have been shown to lead construction spending for nonresidential buildings by a full year The decline in December was due to a 76 percent drop in the commercial component of the Momentum Index while the institutional component fell 07 percent For the full year the Momentum Index gained 43 percent from the end of 2017 with the institutional component increasing 85 percent over the year and the commercial component moving 16 percent higher While the overall Momentum Index registered a gain for the full year this was realized in the first half of 2018 During the final six months of the year the Momentum Index fell 44 percent with the commercial component losing 72 percent and the institutional component remaining essentially flat This suggests that spending for commercial buildings may be reaching its cyclical peak while spending for institutional buildings continues to be supported by the stabilizing influence of public funding for projects such as schools and transportation terminals In December seven projects each with a value of 100 million or more entered planning The two leading institutional projects were a 140 million science and engineering building at Northeastern University in Boston and the 120 million Trophy Park Sports Complex in Jackson N J The two leading commercial projects were a 160 million addition and renovation project at the Two Penn Plaza office complex in New York City and the 125 million Bellevue Cadillac office towers in Bellevue Wash MBCEA elects board members The Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association MBCEA elected two board members C Tucker Cope Jr president at Columbiana Ohio based C Tucker Cope and Associates Inc and David Bergholz customer service manager at Grand Island Neb based Chief Buildings Keith Wentworth president at MBCEA said We are blessed to have so many members willing to step up and take a more active role in the leadership of the MBCEA Two of our hard working friends will be joining the national board on Jan 1 I am pleased to C Tucker Cope Jr share the results of our recent election C Tucker Cope Jr of C Tucker Cope Associates Inc and David Bergholz of Chief Buildings On behalf of membership and the board I thank all the candidates for their commitment to the MBCEA and welcome Cope and Bergholz to the board Cope started as a David Bergholz design engineer at Eufaula Ala based American Buildings Co Then after returning home to join the family business Cope and his team grew C Tucker Cope and Associates into a design build corporation In 2014 he formed Columbiana based Engineering Direct LLC with another engineer which handles the engineering design aspect for C Tucker Cope and Associates and operates independently as a business entity Cope is a member of MBCEA the American Society of Civil Engineers and is licensed in five states Bergholz celebrated his 40th year at Chief Buildings Most of his job experience has been technical He started in drafting when computers were coming online and has worked in computer programming CADD drafting management research and development and customer service 14 METAL CONSTRUCTION NEWS February 2019 www metalconstruct ionnews com
